Selfie Poem
Directions:
When writing your Selfie Poem, follow this format. Start with the words I've given you, and then fill in the blanks. Try to make your poem follow a theme. When you're choosing your words, put in what first comes to mind, and then when you're editing and revising, you can use a thesaurus to change the words to make it have more impact. See my first and second draft Selfie Poem below.

Selfie Poem
Ms. Schlener’s Selfie Poem - First Draft
I am a teacher and friend
I understand that I can’t give up
I worry that I wont be good enough all the time
I believe that we are responsible for who we are
I hope to be remembered
I am a teacher and a friend
I am a teacher and a friend
I dream about happiness
I wonder if I make a difference
I try to give good advice
I want my family to be close
I am a teacher and a friend
Example
Selfie Poem
Ms. Schlener's Selfie Poem - Second Draft
I am a teacher and a friend
I understand that I must persevere in order to succeed
I worry that sometimes failure will happen
I believe that our fate is in our own hands
I hope to leave my mark on the world
I am a teacher and a friend
I am a teacher and a friend
I dream that someday everyone will be happy
I wonder if my students learn to their potential
I try to give good advice
I want my family to be filled with laughter
I am a teacher and a friend
Things to notice...
-
My poem followed a theme (about being a teacher and a friend); I made sure every line was about my "I am" line
-
My revisions made the reader have to think and visualize
-
I used figurative language like “leave my mark on the world” and “our fate is in our own hands”
